birding tour
Done entirely on our custom clear boats, the River Safari is a 3-to-4-hour trip down the river into the wilder, quieter side of Bocas del Toro. The transparent hull provides an unobstructed window into the aquatic world below as we navigate the winding waterways. While Bocas is an incredible hotspot for birdwatching—boasting over 700 recorded species in the region and 130+ within these protected wetlands alone—its terrestrial and freshwater wildlife rarely gets the spotlight it deserves.
This tour takes you deep into a calm, protected, and almost completely isolated area where the dense jungle canopy meets the water. Here, you can take in the untouched scenery and observe wildlife up close without disturbing their natural habitat. Keep your eyes on the river—this is one of the few sanctuaries in Panama where you can spot endangered West Indian manatees gliding silently beneath the surface. Along the banks, you can also look out for freshwater turtles basking on submerged logs and sloths resting quietly in the overarching branches.
Birdwatching in these wetlands is spectacular year-round, with resident waterfowl often hunting along the shorelines. The experience gets even better during peak migration seasons, which bring massive waves of songbirds and raptors passing through between September and November, and again from March to May. Cold drinks, seasonal fresh fruit, and light snacks are provided on board, allowing you to comfortably sit back, relax, and fully immerse yourself in the journey.
