oreba tour

We start this experience with a private boat transfer directly from Bocas across the bay to Almirante, where private land transport will be waiting to take you into the lush hills of Rio Oeste. This dedicated setup ensures a smooth, comfortable transition from the Coast straight into the heart of the rainforest.

Your destination is Oreba, an indigenous Ngäbe community hosting a private, immersive day tour. Led by local naturalists and cacao farmers, you'll walk through organic, shade-grown cacao groves, learning the entire traditional process of growing, harvesting, fermenting, and roasting cacao.

Along the trail, your guide will walk you through native food and medicinal plants used in daily community life, pointing out local wildlife like sloths, poison dart frogs, and toucans along the way. The tour culminates in a hands-on demonstration where Ngäbe women share centuries-old chocolate-making techniques, followed by a traditional farm-to-table lunch prepared with local roots, vegetables, and regional flavors.

A unique Cultural Experience

the experience

The Ngäbe are the largest indigenous group in Panama, holding a deep, spiritual connection to the land that spans generations. For centuries, their survival and identity have relied on a profound understanding Of the rainforest—from using native plants for natural medicine and traditional fiber crafts, to passing down their native language, Ngäbere, through oral storytelling. In a rapidly changing world, preserving these traditions, protecting their ancestral territories, and sharing their heritage on their own terms is essential to keeping their culture alive.

The Oreba project was founded directly by the community as a self- managed cooperative to achieve true economic independence. Rather than relying on external intermediaries, 100% of the proceeds from every tour go directly back into the village.

This cooperative model directly funds crucial community infrastructure, including local education, healthcare access, clean water initiatives, and sustainable farming programs. By participating in the Oreba tour, you are directly supporting a model of tourism that protects the environment, honors indigenous sovereignty, and ensures that future generations of the Ngäbe people can thrive while keeping their traditions intact.

Cacao—known locally as the region's "black gold"—has shaped the landscape and culture of Bocas del Toro for centuries. Grown organically under the shade of rainforest canopies, the high-quality beans produced here are recognized globally for their deep, tropical flavor profile. Beyond its economic importance as a sustainable crop exported to top international chocolatiers, cacao remains a sacred thread linking ancient Ngäbe traditions, modern island life, and a delicious culinary heritage you get to sample right from the source
